How many women are employed by sheriffs' offices?

Females made up 14% of full-time sworn officers employed by sheriffs' offices in 2013. Females have made up about the same proportion of sworn officers since 1993. BJS began collecting data on the number of females in supervisory and managerial positions in 2013. On January 1, 2013, 1.2% of sheriffs' were female, including about 7% of the sheriffs in jurisdictions serving 500,000 or more residents. Overall, females held about 12% of first-line supervisory positions across the nation.
