Presents detailed information on the sentences and characteristics of adults convicted of a felony in State courts in 1996. Data are from a nationally representative sample survey of 344 counties, reporting offenders' sex, race, and age. Also reported are the number sentenced to prison, jail, and probation and the conviction and sentencing statistics for 12 offense categories of felons convicted and sentenced in State courts in 1996. The report highlights trends in the number, sentence type and length, and characteristics of adults convicted of felonies in State courts in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1996.
