Press Release Probation and Parole Populations, 1995

Allen J. Beck, Ph.D., Bureau of Justice Statistics

June 1, 1996    NCJ 161722

This press release announces that at the end of 1995, 3.8 million men and women were on probation or parole, an increase of 119,000 during the year. The 3.2% increase was slightly below the annual average rate of 3.4, from 1990 to 1995. Numerical tables present state-by-state counts and rates for both forms of supervision in the community. The overall numbers are also compared with those of the incarcerated population, 1980-95.
