A 68-percent response rate was achieved in the mail survey of 10,310 agencies. Data collected included agency name and address, function, jurisdiction, employment, funding, and attorney compensation arrangements. Also included is information for any identifiable police prosecutor. Information obtained from State-level agencies covers agencies that provide prosecution or legal services, the primary administrative unit, and investigative bureaus under administrative control of the attorney general. The machine-readable codebook specifies variables and their labels, card location of the variable, code values, the full-text question describing the variable, and other explanatory information. Also provided is a variable description list. Appendixes describe the reliability of estimates and provide variable frequency tables and a survey questionnaire sample.
