October 1, 1985 NCJ 99017
The 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands were surveyed. Responses were received from 47 States. A State central repository maintains comprehensive files of criminal history record information. The States were asked to provide counts or estimates of the number of subject records held and of the number of arrests and final dispositions reported to the central repository in 1981-83. The survey also determined the extent to which States have automated repository name indexes and criminal histories. Respondents also indicated whether the reporting of dispositions to repositories is mandatory or voluntary. The survey queried repository administrators about the completeness and accuracy of repository data bases as well as the extent to which repositories produce statistical reports. Six tables of survey data.
