Publication Justice System Improvement Act Agencies - Annual Report, Third, Fiscal Year 1982

January 1, 1983    NCJ 89772

OJARS coordinates the activities and provides staff support to all the agencies authorized under the Justice System Improvement Act of 1979. Significant 1982 accomplishments at OJARS included implementing the phaseout plan for the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, working with the National Advertising Council to help prevent crime, and resolving all but 15 docketed civil rights compliance cases. NIJ, which sponsors research to learn more about crime and how criminal justice agencies can better control it, focused on the nature and patterns of specific violent crimes and on career criminals. BJS, the national repository for statistical information about crime and the operation of criminal justice systems at all government levels, published its bulletin and technical report series and concentrated on preparing the 'National Report on Crime and Justice.' OJJDP administers a program of assistance to State and local communities to enhance juvenile justice and to reduce/prevent delinquency. It provided formula grants to States and territories, gave technical assistance, and continued such major demonstration programs as Project New Pride and the Removal of Juveniles from Adult Jails and Lockups. A list of State criminal justice councils is appended.
