About this Key Statistic

Executions are the carrying out of a judicially-mandated death sentence for convicted offenders. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are the most serious crimes, known as capital crimes or capital offenses. The specific offenses and circumstances which determine if a crime (usually murder) is eligible for a death sentence are defined by statute and are prescribed by Congress or any state legislature.
