Publication Prisoners in State and Federal Institutions on December 31, 1979 - Full Report

Mimi Cantwell, U.S. Census Bureau

February 1, 1981    NCJ 73719

Data were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Justice Statistics. As in past reports, trends in growth and reasons for change in the characteristics of the prison population are examined, along with changes in the type of admissions and releases. Among the characteristics examined are race, sex, Hispanic origin, geographic distribution, and sentence length (1 year or less and more than 1 year). For the first time in 1979, incarceration rates are provided by sex, race, and Hispanic origin. In addition to the major set of data tables provided in Appendix I, two special tables showing rates of incarceration by sex/race and by Hispanic origin comprise Appendix II; a statement on methodology, Appendix III; and explanatory notes for any jurisdictions whose data are not in strict conformance to National Prisoner Statistics criteria, Appendix IV.
