National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) API

Notice: The domain for the NCVS API endpoint has changed to NCVS API users are encouraged to switch to the new endpoint as soon as possible in order to avoid any interruption of service. For details regarding how to use the new NCVS API endpoint, please refer to the NCVS API Endpoints page (

The NCVS RESTful API is a web service that provides criminal victimization data obtained annually from a nationally representative sample of about 90,000 households and 160,000 persons interviewed each year. NCVS data describe the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States. The NCVS provides the largest national forum for victims to describe the impact of crime and characteristics of violent offenders. It is one of two primary data collections about crime in the United States and is the only source of data about crimes not reported to the police.

Data downloads and variable descriptions

The table below provides dataset variable descriptions and archives of the personal and household victimization datasets in CSV format. Due to the large size of the datasets, calls to the API require specification of a single year. The CSV archives shown below contain data for all of the years specified.

   *Please note:
  • 2016 data were updated in January 2019 and may differ from previous releases. See Criminal Victimization, 2016: Revised (NCJ252121) for more information.
  • The complete 1993-2017 CSV data archive files, downloadable via links in the table below, may be too large to be opened using some versions of Microsoft Excel. Users encountering this limitation in their version of Excel are encouraged to open the file using a text reader or an alternative CSV compatible software package.
