Data Collection: Annual Probation Survey and Annual Parole Survey
Status: Active
Frequency: Annually since 1980; excluding year 1991. Probation data available from 1977-2013. Parole data available from 1975-2013.

Collect administrative data from probation and parole agencies in the U.S. Data collected include the total number of adults on state and federal probation and parole on January 1 and December 31 of each year, the number of adults entering and exiting probation and parole supervision each year, and the characteristics of adults under the supervision of probation and parole agencies. Published data include both national and state-level data. The surveys cover all 50 states, the federal system, and the District of Columbia. They began in 1980 and are conducted annually. Probation data are also available dating back to 1977. Through BJS's National Probation Reports, probation data were collected from 1977 to 1979. Parole data are available dating back to 1975. The parole data from 1975 to 1979 were collected through BJS's Uniform Parole Reports.

    Methodology

    These surveys cover probation and parole agencies in all 50 states, the federal system, and the District of Columbia. The surveys are sent to central reporters in states, with some exceptions for non-centralized systems. See Methodologies in annual reports for details on frame and respondents.

    Changes Over Time

    Periodically, changes are made to the questionnaires to improve measurement and to collect new information on evolving issues in community corrections and topics of greatest interest to the field of community corrections and data users.
