The percent of State prisoners released who had been convicted for a property offense decreased steadily from 45.8% in 1985 to 31.4% in 1999.
The percent of released violent offenders decreased from 34.6% in 1985 to 25% in 1990. From 1990 to 1999, the percent of violent offenders has remained nearly stable, ranging from a low of 24.0% in 1991 to 25.9% in 1999.
Drug offenders accounted for an increasing percent of all State prison releases. Nearly 33% of State prison releases in 1999 were drug offenders (up from 26% in 1990 and 11% in 1985).
The percent of State prisoners released each year who were convicted for a public-order offense increased gradually over the 15 year period, from 6.7% in 1985 to 9.6% in 1999.
