Annual State parole population and entries to State parole, 1980-2002

For the yearend State parole population, the number grew slowly from 196,786 in 1980 to 203,331 in 1982. From 1982 to 1992 the rate of growth was much more rapid, and by the end of 1992, 618,689 persons were on State parole. From 1992-2001, the growth leveled off considerably and at yearend 2001, the State parole population was 653,134. At yearend 2002, the parole population rose 2.4% to 670,169, the largest annual increse since 1992.
Annual entries to State parole increased consistently from 1980 to 1990, from 113,383 to 349,030. From 1990 to 2001, the number of entries increased at a slower pace reaching 445,622 annual entries to State parole during 2001. In 2002, there were 436,306 entries to State parole, nearly 10,000 fewer than in 2001.
